Predictive Pathways: Progressed moon and transits - Kelly Surtees

Our speaker for June was Kelly Surtees, astrology, consultant, writer and astrologer teacher, who presented an insightful workshop titled ‘Predictive Pathways: Progressed Moon and Transits’.

Kelly presented an informative workshop in her warm and engaging style on how to blend the secondary progressed Moon phases with key transits. These core timing tools can enhance and improve your predictive astrology skills. Kelly reflected on her philosophy of predictive astrology and the importance of acting as a guide to tell the story of the chart at that moment in time. As an astrologer it is our job to describe the energetic symbols and framework in order to make sense of what is happening and how long the phase or transit might last in order to empower the client.

An understanding of the topics and themes of the progressed Moon can be gained by looking at the sign and house placement. This can help to understand mood and emotional shifts at that time. The mode and element of the progressed Moon are also important considerations and need to be contrasted to the natal moon sign, mode and element. You can then reflect on whether this is different or similar to the natal moon sign, and will this be comfortable or uncomfortable for the client? If it is different it is an opportunity to learn a new way of being.

The progressed Moon moves quickly, it covers 12-15 degrees per year (approximately 1 degree per month) which is equivalent to 2-3 years to move through one zodiac sign and 3-4 years per phase. Approximately every 27-28 years, around the ages of 27 years, 54 years and the early 80’s, the progressed Moon will be in the same sign which can feel quite familiar but might in turn bring up older emotional patterns.

The phase of the progressed Moon and the transits to the natal chart, especially if it is conjunct to a natal planet, will also give an indication of themes which are highlighted in the chart. The progressed Moon will be conjunct each natal planet every 27 years. The Moon acts as an amplifier so this can be significant in terms of career opportunities when it is conjunct the MC, or luck can be triggered when the progressed Moon gets to natal Jupiter, and surprises or unexpected events can occur when it hits Uranus.

Kelly then took us on an interesting journey through the Moon phases and linked these to the seasons and the concept of temperament:

New Moon (0-44°) – Moon is dark, a seed being planted, the beginning a new journey. This may be a time where one is building a new identity or path in life. This is a darker phase of the Moon which means it can be a more introspective time where one is working behind the scenes.

Crescent (45-89°) – Moon becomes a bit more visible. There is a theme of emergence, and the individual may start to see progress for a variety of projects started in New Moon phase.

First quarter phase/Waxing quarter (90-134°) – Confidence and courage are the focus on one or two goals acted upon. Transition into brighter half of the lunar cycle and is therefore a more dynamic time. Action, decisiveness, and a push and drive forward may be experienced.

Waxing gibbous (135-179°) – An urge to continue to push forward, a phase of bursting and blossoming, there is focus on a goal and more growth during this phase.

Full moon (180-224°) – A time of peak visibility with the most light. There is an increase in opportunities, lots of choice and options appear. This can be a time of exposure and more visibility.

Disseminating/Waning gibbous (225-269°) – The Moon is very bright but also beginning to wane. It is harvest time, we have got a lot and we are sharing it with the world. It can be a good time to help others.

Third/Waning quarter (270-314°) – A time of reorientation, truths and clarity that the individual can come to. The Moon is slipping into darker half of the cycle, so it is important to know where to strike while the iron is hot.

Balsamic (315-359°) – The end of the cycle, a time of release, endings, letting go and retreat. There may be a low ebb in terms of vitality, less visibility in the world, a move towards hibernation and being a hermit. The individual might need to reduce obligations because the energetic pulse has reduced due to the final phase.

Additional themes which relate to the Moon are the body – health, energy, vitality and lifestyle. Depending on the strength of the Moon at that time this can indicate motivation or lack of, confidence and drive. The essential dignities of the Moon will indicate which polarity is more likely to manifest. For example, more stable when the Moon is in its rulership in Cancer, in exaltation in Taurus, or less stable when in detriment in Capricorn, and in its fall in Scorpio and therefore at its least stable.

The Moon represents a cycle of life, and can bring opportunity due to the light it infuses into the chart. The light that the moon transmits is also related to resilience and so the more light the progressed Moon has, the more inner reserves you have and be better able to withstand transits. For example, the Balsamic and New Moon phases give the least light and may manifest as a desire to retreat.

Kelly also brought the material to life with example charts including actors Jane Fonda, Tracee Ellis Ross, Lauren Graham, and the young poet Amanda Gorman. These examples helped to illustrate the power of these predictive combinations in action. Kelly explained how different phases could manifest as potential career opportunities and health issues. Kelly also explained how she worked with a client over an extended period of time and linked phases of the moon and transits to events which unfolded. Kelly also explained how to calculate the natal and secondary progressed Moon phases in a simple and easy way with clear examples.
